The folders on this Wow! CD-ROM contain trial versions of Web page design tools, Web browsers, browser plug-ins, and other utilities you'll enjoy using. Each folder also contains an "About . . . " or "ReadMe" file explaining the files found in that folder, how to install these items and how to use them. (The back cover of The Web Design WOW! Book also tells about the disc contents.)
First of all, the wowbooks.com site gives you a way to link to the many exciting sites showcased in The Web Design Wow! Book.
To get to the wowbooks.com site (aside from the obvious of typing in the URL http://www.wowbooks.com into your open browser), you can make the connection via Netscape or Microsoft Internet Explorer from the desktop by following the instructions below. (If your connection to the Web is through America Online, you’ll need to sign on to AOL before following these platform-specific instructions.)
• From a Windows-based machine with either Netscape or Internet Explorer installed as your browser, double-click the WOWBOOKS.HTM icon.
• From a Macintosh, click, double-click either the WowBooks.com (Explorer) or the WowBooks.com (Netscape) icon, depending on which of these browsers you use.
If you don't have a browser, we're included the latest versions of both Netscape Communicator and Internet Explorer for your browsing pleasure. They're in the folder called "Web browsers." (Duhh.)
For full Web-browsing pleasure, you need to empower your browser to deal with the multimedia-enriched pages you're bound to come across. That's what the contents of the "Browser Plug-Ins" folder are for. Install Shockwave and RealPlayer and your browser will be able to deal with almost any multimedia file.
The Macromedia folder will lead you to the flavor of Shockwave that's right for your browser. The Netscape folder contains the Shockwave installer for Netscape Communicator. If you're an Internet Explorer user, open the IE folder. There you'll find an HTML document which will link you to the site from which Shockwave will install itself automatically into your browser.
Open the RealPlayer folder and run RP32_50.EXE to install version 5 of the RealPlayer plugin.
Before you go too much farther, go to the Utilities folder and run ar32e301.exe in the Acrobat folder to install the Acrobat Reader to allow you to open Acrobat documents.
Also in the Utilities folder are GIF Construction Set, an excellent shareware tool for creating animated GIFs (please pay the shareware fee!), and Stuffit Expander, a tool that allows you to expand and decode these formats:
Stuffit (.sit), Zip (.zip), ARJ (.arj), Arc (.arc), gzip (.gz, .z), uuencode (.uu, .uue), and BinHex (.hqx).
The folder called "WYSIWYG Editors" contains 30-day trial versions (or save-disabled demos) of these powerful "What You See Is What You Get" tools for creating great web pages:
